Deep Healing Is Possible!

An integrative approach to healing trauma, anxiety, depression, and emotional pain.

What is Psychedelic Assisted Therapy?

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is an emerging approach to the treatment of mental health conditions using carefully structured therapeutic support combined with psychedelic substances. Substances that have been studied in this context include ketamine, psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, ayahuasca, and peyote.

Most psychedelic substances remain controlled in many countries, and psychedelic-assisted therapy is generally available only within approved clinical trials or specific medical programs. In the United States, ketamine-assisted therapy is currently legally available psychedelic-based treatment in all states and used for conditions such as depression, anxiety, and trauma-related symptoms.

Research on substances such as psilocybin and MDMA has shown promising results in clinical studies for the treatment of conditions including PTSD, depression, and anxiety. These therapies are currently undergoing regulatory review and may become more widely available in the future.

Legal Status

Most psychedelic substances remain controlled under federal law in the United States. However, some states have begun developing regulated therapeutic programs. Oregon has legalized supervised psilocybin services, and Colorado has passed legislation to create similar programs. As research continues to show promising results, additional states are exploring expanded access to psychedelic-assisted therapies.

How Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Works

Psychedelic-assisted therapy differs from many conventional forms of psychotherapy and medication-based treatment. Rather than focusing solely on ongoing medication use, this approach typically involves a structured therapeutic process consisting of three main phases: preparation, dosing sessions, and integration.

Preparation

Preparation sessions help clients understand the therapeutic process and prepare for the experience. During this stage, the therapist provides education about the potential effects of the substance, discusses benefits and risks, and helps the client develop intentions for the experience.

Preparation also includes discussing expectations, exploring relevant personal history, and building a sense of trust and safety within the therapeutic relationship. This stage is an important foundation for the therapeutic process.

Dosing Sessions

During dosing sessions, the client receives the psychedelic substance in a controlled and supportive setting under professional supervision. In clinical research settings, two trained therapists are typically present to ensure safety and provide support if needed.

Clients are often encouraged to wear eyeshades and listen to specially curated music playlists designed to support inward attention and emotional processing. This environment helps facilitate a state of heightened awareness that may allow individuals to access deeper emotional material, memories, and insights.

The therapist’s role during the dosing session is primarily to provide a safe and supportive presence, help the client navigate challenging experiences if they arise, and maintain a stable therapeutic environment.

Integration

Integration sessions take place after the dosing experience and are a crucial part of the therapeutic process. During integration, the therapist helps the client reflect on insights that emerged during the experience and explore how these insights can be meaningfully applied in daily life.

Integration may involve several follow-up sessions and focuses on translating the emotional and psychological insights from the experience into lasting personal growth and behavioral change.

The Role of Psychedelic Therapy

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is designed to support deeper emotional processing and psychological insight when used within a structured therapeutic framework. While research in this field continues to evolve, early clinical studies suggest that this approach may offer significant benefits for individuals experiencing treatment-resistant depression, trauma-related symptoms, and other mental health challenges.

Who May Benefit From Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is being studied as a treatment for a variety of mental health conditions. While research is still evolving, clinical studies suggest that this approach may be beneficial for individuals experiencing:

  • Treatment-resistant depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related symptoms
  • Anxiety, including existential or end-of-life anxiety
  • Persistent negative thought patterns and emotional blocks
  • Addictive behaviors and dependency patterns
  • Feelings of disconnection, meaninglessness, or lack of purpose
  • Difficulty accessing or processing deep emotional experiences

In the context of a safe and structured therapeutic setting, psychedelic experiences may allow individuals to access deeper emotional material, gain new perspectives, and reconnect with inner psychological resources that support healing and personal growth.

However, psychedelic-assisted therapy is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough screening process is important to ensure safety and determine whether this approach is a suitable option.

Safety and Ethical Considerations

Psychedelic-assisted therapy should always take place within a carefully structured therapeutic framework that prioritizes safety, preparation, and integration.

Important elements of responsible psychedelic therapy include:

  • Thorough screening and assessment before participation
  • Preparation sessions to establish trust, safety, and clear intentions
  • A supportive and controlled environment during dosing sessions
  • Ongoing integration sessions to help process insights and apply them in daily life
  • Close attention to medical and psychological safety

It is also important to note that many psychedelic substances remain controlled under current laws. As a result, psychedelic-assisted therapy involving these substances is typically available only within approved research settings or specific medical programs.

My work focuses on providing therapeutic preparation, harm reduction, and integration support for individuals who are exploring or have had psychedelic experiences, as well as offering ketamine-assisted therapy where legally available.
